Fireman of the Year
Every organization, whether in the public sector, private sector, not-for-profit or volunteer, has that one “go to” person. This person can be counted on for anything – from the smallest handyman task to an intricate project. They are well respected by the rest of the group and are looked up to for advice and guidance from some younger members of the group. The respect given is not ever demanded but earned by being a solid member of the organization and a consistent and fair sounding board for his or her peers.
At the West Albany Fire Company #2 it is no different; this “go to” person is Michael Sawicki. A member in the early 1980’s, who left but only to return again in 1994, Mike has given countless hours of his time to the fire company and the fire service. Mike can be counted on to start and finish whatever project asked of him, with the result being no less then perfection. He has saved the fire company thousands and thousands of dollars due his knowledge, patience and mechanical/electrical abilities. On the fire company side, Mike is always available to help out at a drill, respond to calls (whether major or minor), participate in committees as requested, attend meetings and do whatever is asked of him at work details. As if that isn’t enough, he maintains the civil office of Financial Secretary.
This year Mike was recognized with the Fireman of Year award by the officers of the fire company. This is the most prestigious award given to any volunteer firefighter in the Town of Colonie. It signifies their dedication and devotion to not only the fire service but to their fire company as well. The award is presented to a well rounded individual who is able to manage themselves within the fire company and maintain a healthy balance in their life in general.
Mike exemplifies the true definition of a volunteer – consistent, dedicated and steadfast. His pride in a job well done is the only “pay” he expects.
